Aboriginal Australians change historic monument

In 1913, a monument was erected in Fremantle, Western Australia, paying tribute to explorers who made history in the area.  The plaque reads
“To the memories of Panter, Harding and Goldwyer…attacked at night by treacherous natives, were murdered.”
The men were pastoralists looking for new grazing land around Broome and when Maitland Brown, a prominent politician and fellow-pastoralist discovered their dead bodies, he took revenge on up to 20 Aboriginals and had them tortured and executed.
In 1994, a second plaque was added to the “Explorers Monument.”
This plaque was erected by people who found the monument before you offensive.  The monument described the events at LaGrange from one perspective only, the viewpoint of the white settlers. No mention is made of the right of Aboriginal people to defend their land or of the history of provocation which led to the explorers’ deaths.”

Remote camping and fishing adventure
By Tony Iluka ·  · From Pic of the Week
My grandson is a passionate fisher. I guess I got him started on it at a pretty early age but now at age 12 he has surpassed his grandfather's enthusiasm and dare I say skill!  He found he could fish for bass around his local creeks at Nimbin so his weekends are often taken up fishing with his good friend and neighbour.  I mentioned how I had camped at a place called the Clarence Gorge some years ago and that it was a special place for the beauty, remoteness and bass fishing.  We had the most wonderful weekend kayaking, catching and releasing quite a few bass and we camped beside a campfire and took in the majestic scenery of The Gorge.  Published 09 May 2017.  Catherine Hill Bay NSW 2281

Last Brumby standing
By Tony Iluka ·  · From My Back Roads
My family and friends have camped at Sandon River for many years. Sandon River is in the Yuraygir National Park and is a beautiful river about ten kilometres south of Brooms Head along an often rough, potholed dirt road.   The drive is always interesting through low coastal heath.  Sometimes if you don't check the tide chart you might have to boil the billy and wait for the tide to recede off the road before you can get to the campground. We used to frequently see the endangered Coastal Emus on this drive along the road into Brooms Head and out to Sandon.  You see them only occasionally now.
Another iconic resident around Sandon and Brooms Head is a solitary old Brumby affectionately known by the locals as Brumbles.  Back in 2012 the last remaining handful of brumbies were taken off the Park except for Brumbles who must have outwitted them.  He is apparently about 19 years old and cuts a fine but lonely figure amongst the vast low coastal vegetation that is typical here.  Sandon River is a favourite place of ours and seeing the brumby and coastal emus when we visit adds a bit extra to our trips here.     Published 23 Dec 2016.  Brooms Head NSW 2463

Ebor Falls
Ebor Falls, now one of my favourite sights on the north coast of NSW.
On the trip I wanted to get a shot of a dead tree with the Milky Way rising over but after a day of driving I was unable to find one.  I then started looking for waterfalls that faced east, as that's the direction the Milky Way rises in.   Dangar Falls failed to tick all boxes so my next spot was Ebor falls.   I found a super sketchy path that led down the side of the cliff to get to this spot.   I went down at sunset and photographed the foreground at 6pm (50 minutes after sunset) so that it wouldn't be very noisy.
I then left my camera and tripod set up while I napped next to it for 5.5 hours until the Milky Way was in the right position.  I then blended the two exposures later in Photoshop and it resulted in this.     Published 08 May 2017.  Ebor NSW 2453

Australias largest raptor, the Wedge-tailed Eagle cleaning up the road kill. Unfortunately many get hit by cars and trucks while feeding on road kill which is why I find it important to move road kill off the road so other animals can feed on the carcass safely.          Published 05 May 2017.
